Why do people masturbate and Is masturbation normal?
There is so much taboo around this, and no one has clearly answered this question yet. Many gurus and people have only made it more complicated than ever.
There are so many myths around these topics. People still believe in them, which often leads to confusion and frustration. I want to share some of the insights I’ve gained from my own experiences, because I’ve been through both phases.
During my school years, I was misguided by friends and others, and I got into the habit of masturbation. Over time, I started to feel uncomfortable about it, so from class 11 onward, I decided to do some research. I wanted to understand why people do it, why they watch porn, and similar questions that often confused my mind.
Back then, I felt bad because I used to think that if everything related to sex is considered bad, then why is it that so many people are doing it—and even creating videos about it? Despite the taboo, it is still one of the most widely consumed things in the world.

All these questions led me to meditation, searching for God, and seeking answers from the universe. In this process, I was able to find some clarity for myself. Everywhere I looked, people seemed to give two completely different answers, which only created more confusion on this topic. As a result, one is often left struggling between self-pleasure and the religious or moral values they have developed for themselves. The same was true for me during my school years.
I was confused, as anyone would be, because doctors often say that masturbation is normal, while religious people advise against it based on unverified information. So, I decided to find out the truth for myself.
Until the age of 15 or 16, I was not even aware of what masturbation was, as I had never heard about it in any form. By the time I reached class 10, students had started talking about such things, though porn was not very common at that time. I was a soccer player, so most of my time was spent at school, on the field, then home, sleep, and repeat the same routine the next day. I had very little knowledge of sex or masturbation. I used to visit Hanuman Ji’s temple daily, where I heard about the principle of Brahmacharya, though I didn’t really understand its true meaning then.
Everything was going smoothly until one day when we were preparing a PPT for a class 10 project. For that, I had to use the internet, so we went to a cyber café. After completing the project and just before leaving, one of my friends—who was aware of porn and such things—told me to type “XXX” in the search bar. I had never heard of it and thought it was some sort of code, maybe even a way to hack a computer, because at that time we were crazy about technology and computers. So, I typed “XXX” into the search bar, and suddenly explicit content appeared on the screen.
My first reaction was, “Cheeeeee, how dirty!” I even felt like telling my friend’s mother, “Do you know what kind of things your son is watching?”
He apologized to me and the other friends, and then we left for our homes. On the way back, everyone was discussing things like “Who actually does this?” and “How do people get into such things?” Different curious questions came up, because for many of us, it was the first time seeing something like that.
After that incident, things changed. Every day at school, we used to ask him questions, and he began telling us about masturbation and other related topics. From then on, we slowly started learning about all these things.
Masturbation and pornography are harmful and bad for children.
Now that all of us had become interested and curious about these things, without having much awareness, we often visited the cyber café to search for them. From there, I gradually began to learn more about the whole subject, the history of the porn world, and why people engage in it.
That was the point when my journey with masturbation began. At first, I never engaged in it because I used to feel guilty about it. But gradually, school discussions and peer pressure influenced me. When you are part of a group and the only one who stays away from such things, people often consider you weak, while those who indulge portray themselves as strong. They would even boast about how many times they had done it.
I listened to them but was never a real fan of masturbation, so I mostly ignored their conversations and just agreed with whatever they said. Sometimes, out of curiosity, I tried it too, but afterwards I always felt bad, as if I had done something wrong. That guilty feeling actually protected me from doing it frequently or becoming addicted to it.
At the same time, I was also learning about Brahmacharya—its true meaning, its benefits, and why it is considered important for children and young people. So, both experiences—exposure to peer influence and the knowledge of self-control—were happening in parallel in my life.
Today, I am able to answer most of the questions that young people have in their minds related to masturbation and pornography—because I have personally experienced it. I went through the phase of masturbation, and later I practiced complete Brahmacharya for 6–7 years. From this journey, I have found many possible answers and insights related to these issues.
So, let’s dive into the questions.
Yes masturbation good or bad?
So the answer is yes, it is very bad if you do it too much. It affects your energies, mind, and soul (the divine energy within), lowers your morale, and sometimes makes you feel bad about yourself.
Yes masturbation is a sin?
No, masturbation is not a sin. No matter what any religion says, it is not a sin and does not affect any religious sentiments. It does not make you wrong in God’s eyes in any way. It is not a sin because it is a biological process, made by nature, and a natural part of the body. Even if you do not masturbate, your body will still produce sperm, which I will explain in other answers, and the sperm will leave your body naturally.
Is masturbation bad for your health?
Yes, overdoing masturbation can harm your body, mind, and even your veins and penis because the body has its limitations. When we try to break them, we have to pay a certain price.
Is masturbation safe?
It is safe because no one else is involved, so there is no harm and no risk of transmitting sexual diseases.
Does masturbation cause acne, blindness, or shrink your penis?
No, it may not cause acne or anything like that because it helps regulate your blood circulation and also releases your body heat. But as I said before, doing it too much can put your health at risk. Masturbation does not cause blindness.
Does masturbation make you lose your virginity?
Yes, possibly, because if you are using something in that way, it can make you lose your virginity.
Does masturbation affect the hymen or sensitivity?
This question needs to be addressed by a woman. Here, I am answering from a man's perspective. Even for men, too much masturbation can hurt the penis, make it numb, or even make the skin less sensitive. I guess the same could happen for women.
Is there a "right" age to start masturbating?
Yes, surely there is a right age for masturbation. One should not masturbate before the age of 18, even if your biological urges are present, because doing it too early can affect your biological clock. Later, this may cause challenges at the appropriate age. Some people face issues with partners, others face problems with sexual timing, and many more sex-related issues that we hear about in today’s world.
What about "excessive" masturbation?
It can make you sick and obsessed with something. If you do it excessively, you might have too many thoughts about something. It could also be because you are watching too much related content. There can be multiple reasons, but excessive masturbation is very, very bad for you.
Masturbation affect immunity?
Yes, it affects your immune system and definitely impacts your overall health."
How many times one should masturbate if one want to do it?
The first answer is that one should not do it at all, first of all. If the urge is too strong, then one should try to do it only once a month, because this might not affect your biological clock. Another way is to first check how many days it takes for your sperm to naturally ejaculate, either through dreams or other ways. Once you know this, you can plan accordingly. Doing it daily might signal your body to produce more sperm, which can later affect your health.
Is Not masturbating is good for health?
Yes, if you do not masturbate, your body and mind become more stable. Your strength and capabilities improve, and you also gain better self-control over yourself and your thoughts. I have experienced it myself and was totally amazed at how it improves tolerance and so on.

I tried to answer the most common questions according to my experience. If you have any other questions, let me know in the comments, and I will surely answer them.
